eBay Canada has a refurbished program with 4 grades. The problem is that they are unsure of how to convey the differences between the grades to users. They approached me with this problem and after some research, I presented my creative solution.
I pitched the idea of creating an animated video of an eBay character going through 4 levels of a retro video game, each representing each grade of their refurbished program. As the character goes through each level they will collect power-ups that act as differentiators between the 4 grades. At the end of the level the user will see a summary of the power-ups along with how much they can save with this unique program.
The main character is Maia Terra, also known as eBay’s “Refurb Nerd.” She is passionate about saving the planet. She has vowed to take lightly used electronics, collect power-ups, and inform users about eBay's Refurbished program.
Since the power-ups are used as differentiators within the program, I tried to make them look distinct from eachother, while quickly communicating what each power-up represents.
Each item was carefully selected for each level based on feedback from eBay. It was fun turning modern electronics into 16-bit artwork.
Each level was inspired by popular 16-bit console games. I worked with a local artist to create these 4 backgrounds. Can you guess which retro games inspired these levels?
At the end of every level, this screen shows the user the key differences between eBay's refurbished grades. As the user progresses through the video, they learn about eBay's refurbished program.
Here is a rough version of what the complete video will look like. I am working with eBay to extend the time of the video to slow down some of the pacing, but here it is thus far.
