eBay Canada wanted to reclaim their position in the sneaker resale market. They came to me asking for design they could use for apparel and at various sneaker events. The design has to be true to the culture, while sharing a level of continuity with eBay's branding.
Using the Jordan 1's profile, I found a font that matched the visual "graffiti" style of sneakerhead culture. The bold rounded shapes of the font reminded me of the pieces that are stitched together to create the body of the shoe. I used the collar of the shoe to anchor the eBay logo and make it stand out.
Given the nostalgic presence that eBay has in pop culture, I wanted to try a version using their retro logo. I went with the shape of a low profile shoe, since it matched the retro appeal of the logo. The font I chose matches the font of the nostalgic eBay logo for continuity. I decided to move away from this concept, since I couldn’t justify branding backwards when it comes to representing something new.
For my second concept, I focused on the foundation of the shoe, the sole. My intent was to create a harmonious design, using elements from various iconic shoes. Sneakerheads are all about the details, that’s why I incorporated authentic sole elements to personify that you can trust the authenticity of shoes sold on eBay.
As I conceptualized these logo designs, I looked at iconic Jordan shoes from various angles, trying to capture the essence and beauty of its’ design. For this concept, I wanted to spotlight the front face of a shoe.
When I stylized the front face, I tried to use negative space to accentuate the lines between the elements of the shoe. I had some fun with it and implemented the colours of eBay’s logo. Maybe a possible shoe collab?
This was the concept that eBay chose for their Sneaker logo. It was a bit of a surprise as concept 1 was my favourite. The first official use of the logo was as a hoodie and t-shirt design, as shown below.
Happy to see the eBay Sneakerhead logo getting some instagram exposure. ET Canada's Tyrone Edwards wearing the sweater and they turned the logo in a cake!
